I wanted to extend my thanks. This really helped out.
My nvidia card is now playing nicely w/FC8. I used to think that multiple monitors were excessive, but using my new setup for 15 min. has changed my mind.
Thanks again,
Lex

Luke (sexyer1) - I'm glad you were able to find it again. Let me know if there is anything I could write a blog entry about that might help you. Does it sound like I'm desperate for blog topics, lol? I promise I'm not, I just enjoy helping people out if I know how to do something. :)

Comment on Basic photo enhancements with The GIMP by Andy Melton

Luke (sexyer1) - Thanks. I am glad you appreciated this entry and hope you will get some use out of it. From the sound of it I think you will. I too, had been avoiding it because I had a bad experience with the last few versions but with this latest version the GIMP community developers have really done a whole lot to improve it. It's so much more organized. It could be better organized but I'm sure it will get there.

I agree with you. I hate it when people try to use Paintbrush to do crap. The files always come to me bloated. You're right. They haven't changed the program much. They also haven't changed it much in Vista. I don't know what it's like in the Gold release of Vista because I don't run it but I know when I was playing with Vista Beta 2 and Release Candidate 1 it had not changed all that much from XP, if at all.

I had no issues running The GIMP on Windows but that doesn't mean everyone else will have the same experience. All I did was download the executable, double click and it installed. When/If there is a wizard that comes up after installation just say "OK" to all the defaults. My PC is solely running Linux (Fedora) now and installation is easier (yum -y install gimp, and boom you're done).

I did have plans to encode the video into flash format and then use a flash player created by someone else instead of using Vimeo but it was just really easy to do. I also get more views when it's on a service like Vimeo. I'm still planning on writing a blog entry about integrating a flash player into a WordPress blog. Hopefully I can work on that soon. Let me know how the private/embedding clip goes for your client.

Oh and if you have any specific questions about how to do something with The GIMP rather it's related to photography or web design please ask. That way if I don't know how to do it I can learn how to do it and show others how to do it then. I don't know everything about The GIMP so it would be a way for me to learn as well. Thanks, Luke.

I had read your article previously, and then I had forgotten it, but I ended up going through the WP documentation and found out how again..(before coming back to this article again, lol)

It really is a cool feature, and now that I've tried it out, I have so many ideas coming to mind for future projects! :p

Yay @ WordPress...

Thanks again Mr, I didn't realize GIMP could do all this, I have avoided it.

I know a few people who need a basic image program, but this looks far better than them staying with Microsoft Windows Paint which drives me mental when I see cut-up images saved in poor quality from that stupid program.. (why did Microsoft even bother with paint? And why has it never changed up to XP version, I think XP has the same Paint as 98 or maybe Windows 95!? lol)

I have a feeling I suggested to my mum to try using GIMP a few months back, but the installation confused her and I was too busy to help at the time. I'll have a look at it and help her install it in a weeks or so when I give myself a holiday.

PS. That Vimeo player is hot! I made a website in which that player would look great on, just awaiting the actual video from them. I'm not sure if they would want their video embed-able by others, so I've been looking on the vimeo website to see if there is a way to stop the "embed" option from displaying, I wonder if the clip was set to private would that stop it from showing... then again if it's set to private maybe it can't even be embedded my the owner.. looking into that now.. lol

Asterisk in the raw form is a bear to work with. I use "Trixbox" www.trixbox.org which is asterisk bundled with all the parts, lots of addons and a front end to make it much easier. You burn the CD iso and install (it will wipe out whatever is on the harddisk). For a while I used softphones like SJPhone but there are others. Then I got a USB phone for the softphone and now I have some real SIP phones and the SMC WiFI. You can get started without any real VoIP accounts which makes it like Skype. For VoIP there are too many players to list but the cheapest is to treat inbound and outbound separately since you can find inbound for $4-$10/month with all inbound calls included. You pick your location so for example get a local number and one located far away so those people can call you on a local number. Then get an outbound VoIP service and either pay a flat fee or by the minute. There are some out there that let you test free long enough to get the hang of it.

After a while you figure out the best way to deal with it and you give up all the expensive providers including Vonage (which is pretty cheap). For the best stability you can keep the landline but use it on the PBX (via an FXO device). Once you have the landline in play you can extend it to any SIP device which is what I did for the boss, he wanted to work from home but still use the office landline. I put the landline on the PBX and made his SIP extension the destination. Now the office number rings at work and his house or anywhere he can get a WiFI signal.

About the Skype version, you have to be careful since the phone has 1/2 the RAM so you can't simply send SIP firmware to it. But it can be done I hear with a minimal version of the firmware. Bottom line is that I love having my own PBX and can mix and match all sorts of toys on it including voice mail, IVR, automated attendant and anything else a big company would have but pay $0 for the features. I only pay $4 for a local number and whatever minutes I use to the outside. Calling anyone I have setup on the PBX no matter where they are is free.
